Why Choose an Orthodontist?

Banner with smiling woman

Choosing an orthodontist is an important decision for you and your family. Choosing an orthodontic specialist is highly encouraged as teeth, and in some cases, entire facial structures can be permanently changed by orthodontic treatment. All orthodontists are dentists, however, only 3% of dentists in Canada are orthodontists.

What is an Orthodontist?

Orthodontic specialists are the dental specialists who correct dental and facial irregularities, day in and day out. An orthodontic specialist is expert at moving teeth, helping jaws develop properly and working with the patient to help make sure the teeth stay in their new positions.

Additional Education

Orthodontists require additional training to specialize in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of dental and facial irregularities. This is accomplished through an additional two to three years of intense orthodontic and facial orthopedic studies over and above the requirements to become a doctor of dental surgery (dentist).

How do you know that your doctor is an orthodontist?

Only orthodontists can belong to the Canadian Association of Orthodontists, American Association of Orthodontics or the World Federation of Orthodontics.
