Two Phase Orthodontic Treatment

The Canadian and American Associations of Orthodontists recommends that most children should have an orthodontic screening by age 7. This allows the orthodontist to determine if orthodontic treatment is indicated as well as determine the best time for the patient to start orthodontic treatment.

What is Two Phase Orthodontic Treatment?

Two phase orthodontic treatment is a specialized process that combines tooth straightening and physical, facial changes that provide an excellent foundation to build and maintain a healthy smile for a lifetime. It begins with early detection in children, which is why orthodontic screening is recommended by age 7.

early treatment

The goal of the first phase of treatment is to help improve how the upper and lower jaws fit together at an ideal time of growth and development. Children tend to benefit largely from early orthodontic treatment as it may prevent the removal of permanent teeth later in life, or the need for  surgical procedures to realign the jaws. If children after the age of 6 are found to have crowding issues or a jaw discrepancy, they are candidates for Phase I orthodontic treatment.

Everyone loves to take a break, even teeth!   At the end of the first phase  of treatment, and before the second phase of treatment, a resting period is taken to allow for the loss of baby teeth and the eruption of permanent  teeth. Periodic visits to see Dr Cameron for observation are necessary to ensure that optimal orthodontic health is maintained. A successful first phase of treatment will have created room for permanent teeth to erupt that otherwise may have become impacted or severely displaced.

The goal of the second phase of orthodontic treatment is to make sure each tooth has an exact location in the mouth where it is in harmony with other teeth, lips, tongue and cheeks. When this harmony is achieved, the teeth will function together properly and your smile will shine! Phase II treatment involves full upper and lower braces or Invisalign clear aligners, and typically lasts for a period of 24 months. Retainers are worn after this phase to ensure you retain your amazing smile.
